The day began with a typical Irish scene: grey, gloomy, and rainy. But that didn’t deter us from heading to Kinard Beach. With thoughts of the rugged coastline and the mystery of Kinard Beach in mind, we navigated narrow roads, passing by the Kinard Burials Grounds, in search of what this place had to offer.
Upon arriving at Kinard Beach, we were greeted by a wild sea, as this location is well known for. Waves crashed vigorously against the coastline, and the air was filled with a mist of salty sea breeze. It was evident that we were in a special place.
Is Kinard Beach a Hidden Gem?
Kinard Beach is situated approximately 9 kilometers (5 mi) east of the town of Dingle in County Kerry. It’s a small, secluded spot not widely known, but that’s what makes it so special. Nevertheless, more and more tourists find their way there because of one unique element.
Upon arrival, we noticed there wasn’t much parking available. At most, four or five cars could park along the side of the road. This gave us the feeling that we had discovered a well-kept secret.
THE INFAMOUS SEA AND ‘THE FOAL’
As we strolled along the beach, we were enchanted by the power of the sea. Waves rolled forcefully onto the shore, and the wind howled in our ears. Kinard Beach is renowned for its turbulent sea, and that makes this location all the more impressive.
But the highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the massive and dominating rock formation called “The Foal” (or “Searrach” in Irish). This impressive rock lies just off the coast and gives Kinard Beach its unique character. It’s a place full of mystery and beauty. With a little imagination, you can see the resemblance between the rock formation and a young horse or foal, although some people may think of it more as a chess piece, the knight. (In Dutch we call this piece ‘the horse’)
Is it possible to visit with a camper?
Yes, it’s not a problem to reach Kinard Beach with a normal-sized camper. However, you should be prepared for the narrow turns and especially the very narrow roads!

Kinard Beach is also known as a popular spot for bass fishermen, at least that’s what I’ve been told… I can’t confirm it as I didn’t see any during my visit.
One of the greatest advantages of Kinard Beach is its seclusion. Because it’s not too well-known, you can enjoy a peaceful and serene day by the sea without the crowds of tourists. It’s the perfect choice for anyone seeking privacy and an escape from the daily hustle and bustle. You can walk to ‘The Foal’ through a path across the meadows. (it goes up-hill)

Like many coastal areas in Ireland, Kinard Beach is protected and maintained to preserve its natural beauty and biodiversity. Visitors are encouraged to be environmentally responsible and not leave any waste behind.

Despite the unfavorable weather, our adventure at Kinard Beach was an experience we will never forget.
