The region around Lyngen and the Lyngen Alps is part of a breathtaking environment in Norway, imbued with natural beauty and wonders. In this enchanting region, there is so much to write about and discover, but today I want to focus on the splendor of Ullsfjord. As I traveled along the picturesque FV91 from Kjosen to Blåvatnet, I couldn’t help but pass through Ullsfjord.
Ullsfjord left me speechless with its incredible sunset—I didn’t know where to look first or, better said, what to photograph first. Despite the mighty snow-capped mountain peaks in the background, the fjord exudes overwhelming tranquility and serenity. Even the ferry you have to take if you want to continue toward Tromsø leaves you in awe. And then, after another 500 meters, I discovered the Gamslett Museum. A place that just never ceases to amaze in this region where you have to look all around you.
The Gamslett Museum has a rich collection and captivating stories, that take you on a journey through the history and culture of this special region. A typical fisherman’s farm that can be dated to the 18th century
Here, you will find a wealth of knowledge and insights into local traditions, the relationship between humans and nature, and the unique way of life in this part of Norway. The museum reflects the deep-rooted connection of the local population with the landscape.
As I continued my way on the Fv91 true Ullsfjord, I became increasingly enchanted by the abundance of natural wonders. The fjord itself, with its calm waters, reflected the majestic mountains, creating a picturesque scene that will forever be burned in my memory. It was a place where time seemed to stand still, and where the hustle and bustle of daily life faded into the background. In this tranquility, you can write your own story that you will never forget. Just don’t forget to slow down your pace.
The region around Ullsfjord is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. With its hiking trails winding through lush forests and rugged cliffs, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views and experience the pure serenity of nature. I will delve into this topic in one of my (later) posts. Whether it’s spotting wildlife, admiring colorful flower meadows in the summer, or witnessing the enchanting Northern Lights in the winter, Ullsfjord is an environment where everyone can find something to delight them.

GAMSLETT MUSEUM
Gamslett is a historical fishing farm located in Lyngen, Norway, and is part of the Nord-Troms Museum. It dates back to the 18th century, and the settlement around Gamslett has been established for centuries. The farm showcases the lifestyle of fisherman-farmers in North Troms until the 1950s. Both men and women were involved in fishing, with women playing an essential role in managing the farm and preparing supplies for the long fishing seasons. The Gamslett farm consists of various buildings and a garden with traditional plants. The Nord-Troms Museum was established in 1979, and the Gamslett collection, originally gathered by Alf Gamslett, is a significant part of the museum. Gamslett also has a volunteer interest group called “Friends of Gamslett.”
How to get there
The farm is found ca. 500 meters north of Svensby ferry quay. Travelling time from Tromsø is about an hour including the ferry between Breivikeidet and Svensby
