The Bay of Kotor, with its craggy mountains and historical ruins, offers many picturesque trails, but no path is as forgotten and neglected as the one leading to Sveti Andrija Fortress. Nestled above the charming town of Perast, this 19th-century fortress, built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, stands majestically at an elevation of 743 meters, providing hikers with unparalleled views of the Bay of Kotor and beyond.
Historic Trails and Breathtaking Scenery The trail to Sv Andrija, originally designed for horses, winds through a lush beech forest, creating a serene hike filled with the sounds of nature. As you ascend the serpentine stone path, each turn offers a new vista, culminating in a panoramic view from the top that stretches across the Bay of Kotor to Mount Vrmac and the Verige Strait.
Fort Stražnik: The Eagle’s Nest Not far from Sv Andrija, Fort Stražnik, also known as the Eagle’s Nest, marks another historic point of interest. Once a defensive outpost for the Austro-Hungarian Empire against the Ottoman Empire, this fortress lies to the southwest of Montenegro near Crkvice. It’s a lesser-known gem that provides a deep dive into the military history of the region and stunning views of its rugged landscape.
A Regretful Miss Despite the allure of the ruins, which still bear original German stone inscriptions, time constraints prevented us from reaching them. The desire to explore Perast before nightfall meant leaving some stones unturned—literally. However, the journey to the fortress itself was undoubtedly the highlight, offering the most breathtaking aspects of Montenegro’s natural and historical beauty.
Whether you are an avid hiker, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, the path to Sveti Andrija Fortress is a must-visit. It’s not just a trek; it’s a journey through time, offering a window into the past and scenic splendor that will linger in your memory long after your visit.
Halfway along this path, you come across a dilapidated church sv Ivan. I have tried to find more info on this but unfortunately without conclusive results
!!The path up was completely overgrown with bushes in several places some of these bushes are with large thorns. My travel partner had suffered major injuries from this, by slipping and this was her last hold!!
In some places, the paths are completely washed away or so narrow that if you take a wrong step you slide down a few meters.
It is not a long walk but it is a very tough walk. The path is also not entirely without danger, and a pair of sturdy shoes and long pants are recommended. I also recommend you bring enough drinks (about 2liter the man in warm weather) and some sugar.
I therefore strongly advise against hiking after or during rain.
Despite the necessary dangers that can be neglected by staying alert and using common sense.
The reward is a view that is almost indescribable.
There is also another road to this castle and this road is included in the world’s most dangerous routes
