Rose is located at the very tip of the “Lustila” peninsula in Montenegro and is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages in the country. This fishing village, surrounded by rugged mountains and lush Mediterranean forests, exudes a timeless charm. The houses, lined along the sheltered quay, withstand the test of time and offer a stunning view of the Strait of “Kumbor,” the gateway between the Adriatic Sea and the Bay of Kotor.
When I arrived there in the evening, the village seemed deserted and yet not. It was so peaceful that you could only hear the soft rippling of the water. You could almost see to the bottom of the clear, blue water. Although you can walk through the small village in a blink of an eye, I advise you to take your time. Sit down on the sidelines and let the sounds of tranquility wash over you.
Everywhere along the stone quays, you encounter nets and fishing boats, remnants of a rich maritime history. The village not only has a rich history, dating back to its destruction by the Saracens in the 9th century, but also a deeply rooted Venetian influence visible in the architecture and narrow alleys. The churches, especially the oldest dedicated to Our Lady, built in 1783 by a Venetian merchant, reflect the spiritual legacy of Rose.
Rose is also a paradise for archaeologists and divers, thanks to the regular finds of old shipwrecks providing valuable insights into former seafaring. The old Fort Rose, now transformed into a bar-restaurant, offers an idyllic spot for swimmers and is a favorite diving location.
The exclusive vacation homes of wealthy Montenegrins reflect the beauty of this secluded gem. For travel enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy the slow route, Rose offers a unique experience that should definitely not be missing on your checklist. Fortunately, the big bloggers haven’t talked about it much yet, so you can still truly enjoy this idyllic village. Allow yourself to get lost in the soothing atmosphere of this special place and let time stand still.
